We expect leaders to enable change but sometimes forget that leaders are subject to that very change themselves.
Remember, strategy is always about change.
But strategies do not fail. People do.
And leading change is about making sure people are willing and able to go forward toward an uncertain future to make the strategy stick.
So how can leaders be loyal to the cause of the organization?
They should go against the grain when needed and follow the flow when it’s not.
That sounds like “Solomonic”. But it’s not.
Distributed leaders know best what is at stake and should get involved in designing and leading change. So they can push back upwards. And then, they should push forward in their teams.
We often neglect the importance of getting (middle) managers on board. But they are the linking pin between strategic thinking and strategic action.
This month I will be working with groups of leaders on how to lead the change and avoid passive, victim behavior.
To stimulate reflection and action, I have developed a new keynote.
