Dear colleague,

I am proud to present the 10th Newsletter on Linkedin. It is full of insights and opportunities. I would like you to read it carefully and act upon all the messages you’ll find.

Recession?

Recession or not? It is not easy to predict whether or not there will be a recession in the future. Recessions are a normal phase of the economic cycle and can occur for various reasons. Factors contributing to a recession could be a decline in consumer spending (it is happening), an increase in interest rates (it is happening), a decrease in business investment (it is happening), and other economic and political events (there are a lot of them).

What is certain is that the economy is slowing down.

Economic forecasting is not an exact science, and it is impossible to predict whether a recession will occur. But It is always a good idea for individuals and businesses to be prepared for economic downturns, regardless of whether or not a recession is expected. This can involve saving money, diversifying investments, and having the plan to manage financial challenges. This is what we call resilience: the ability to withstand or cope with adversity. Resilience is developed at best before a downturn occurs.

Money and Minutes

Belgium is facing some tough challenges. Our deficit is enormous, and our debt is only growing. I am pessimistic about our resilience as a country. Changes are very hard to implement, and as unions are taking to the streets to protest against energy prices and for additional salary increases, we know that doing more of the same will not work.

I have been pleading for a new social pact for years. The pact should not focus on increasing purchasing power but on building resilience, enhancing learning and innovation, and preparing ourselves for new times. Let’s not discuss money and minutes but prosperity. And let’s not get stuck in regrets and nostalgia about gone-by times and focus on a sustainable future.

How can we maintain and enhance the prosperity of all people? That is the main question.

Let’s build a future for which our children and grandchildren will thank us.
